For seven months, including the summer, he spends his days in the pool, working on speed and technique in four different strokes -- freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.
The time he spent in the water paid off last week as Darnell earned a bronze medal in the U.S. Southeast Junior Olympic Swimming Championships in Memphis, Tenn. Darnell, 12, swam the 50-meter backstroke in 34.61 seconds, missing the silver medal and a trip to the national finals in New York by .02 of a second.
Darnell entered the finals with the eighth-best qualifying time from the heat races. He swam a personal best to earn the medal.
Given a chance to train year-round, Darnell thinks he could go faster.
``The two guys that beat me swim all year long, indoors in the winter and outdoors in the summer,'' Darnell said. ``It doesn't seem like a big deal, but it makes a difference.
``They get to concentrate on technique in the winter and work on speed in the summer.''
Darnell, who works out with weights to improve his strength, swam a 4A time in Memphis, the highest that he can go in his age division. He is working out with swimmers five and six years older than himself to improve his times.
When the natatorium at Gulf Coast Community College opened last fall, Darnell and his teammates figured they would have a place to train in the winter. But the pool is booked solid with swimming classes seven days a week, not allowing the young swimmers access.
``If we could swim in the winter we'd all go faster,'' Darnell said. ``That and we don't have swimming programs in the middle schools. We have to wait until high school.''
By contrast, middle schools in Fort Walton Beach offer swimming classes as part of the physical education curriculum.
Darnell was the only member of the PCST team to finish in the top three places in any event in Memphis. PCST results:

[ca5][83,10,,11]HESTER TAKES TROY JOB
[81,9.5,,10.5]# MDNM Jerry Hester, who coached the Ponce de Leon boy's basketball team for the last six years, has accepted an assistant basketball coaching job at Troy State University.
Hester will begin his new position Sept. 1.
The opening at Troy State became available this year as the Trojans move from Division 1-AA to Division 1 in athletics.
``They were adding an assistant coach in the upgrading of the program,'' Hester said. ``I had worked in their camps for the last four years and knew one of the other assistant coaches, David Felix.
``Coach (Don) Maestri offered me a position and it's a chance of a lifetime. To go from a Class 1A high school to a Division 1 college coaching job is just great.''
Hester has sent two players to Troy State in his six years. John Harrison, who played junior college basketball at Gulf Coast and Paul Bryan, were both members of the Trojan team a year ago that set a national record for scoring.
Harrison graduated and Bryan has since transferred to Berry College.
A third Ponce de Leon player, Greg Gilman, signed this year with Chipola.
Hester said that the search for his replacement is currently under way. A new head coach will be named prior to the Oct. 1 official starting date for high school basketball practice for Florida schools without a football program.
